My Summer Grab & Go Bag 2.0

Summer outings look a little different these days, now that social distancing and face masks are a part of our normal “going out” routine. This also meant that we needed to update our Summer Grab & Go Bag. This bag has become a staple in our house over the years and I switch it up with the seasons: extra hat and gloves in the Winter, extra pair of pants or sweatshirt for cool Fall days, and so on. I was inspired by another blogger who shared her mom-hack for summer essentials and figured it was time for a blog post update to show you what our bag looks like now that the girls are a little older and we’re in the middle of a global pandemic.

The Bag // My Thirty-One bag from a few summers back is still going strong (you can find a similar version here.) It’s great because it has lots of compartments all the way around the outside of the bag for extra storage.

The Essentials // Sunscreen, bug spray, extra sunglasses for each kiddo, kleenex, nail clippers, hair ties, and a bottle of H20. The bare necessities are all there, and then some.

First Aid Kit // I upgraded my mini first aid kit this summer as we’ve had a few mosquito bites — this cute little bag was “free” from Target with the purchase of 3 first aid items (bandaids, Neosporin and Benadryl itch stopping cream for those pesky mosquito bites.)

Hand sanitizer // I used to keep a package of these Purell wipes on hand, but those are nearly impossible to find these days. Instead, I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer and refill it as needed.

Baby Wipes // This is one item I swear I will buy for the rest of my life. We’ve long since said goodbye to diapers but having baby wipes within reach is a MUST for cleaning up messes and sticky fingers after summer ice cream!

Disposable Coverings // Even though we’re out of the potty-training phase with my youngest she’s still learning the ropes when it comes to public restrooms. I keep a few of these disposable toilet seat covers in a wet/dry bag for those times when a seat cover isn’t available. One item I no longer keep in the bag but am re-considering given the current pandemic, are disposable placemats. I used to keep these in the bag and think they might be a good addition right now. You never know when you’ll need a clean spot to eat on so it’s probably a good idea to keep a couple on-hand, just in case.

Masks & Gloves // I keep an extra mask for each family member in a Ziploc baggie, along with a couple pairs of rubber gloves. This way if someone forgets a mask, or God forbid loses one, we have an extra on hand. Same thing with the gloves, you just never know when you might need to use them.

Snacks // Does this even require an explanation?! LOL. I repurposed an old nursing cooler and stuffed it with snacks — granola, goldfish, applesauce pouches. Basically, anything that won’t spoil and will keep my kiddos happy in a pinch.

Outdoor Blanket & Towel // I still keep my outdoor blanket and towel with us, but now that we have a new(er) car I keep them in the hidden trunk compartment so that I don’t have to use precious space in my Grab & Go. I can’t tell you how many times the towel has come in handy. Just this past weekend we took the kids canoeing and halfway there realized we packed everything BUT towels (womp, womp.) Luckily I had the extra towel already stored in the car! I even keep it there in the winter (think after a day of sledding on the hill – cold and wet!)

This bag has seriously eliminated the last-minute scramble as we’re trying to get out of the house, and we can rest assured that we never leave home without our masks and hand sanitizer!

Can you believe that it’s been one year since I told you all that “I quit my job?”

When I first quit, Michael would say “take some time and figure out what you want your next role to look like.” It would annoy me because I kept thinking I DON’T KNOW. I didn’t know how long I wanted to stay home and I didn’t know what kind of job I wanted next. However, I knew what I didn’t want. I didn’t want to commute an hour in gridlock to and from the office. I didn’t want my kids stuck in daycare for 9 hours a day. My life priorities had changed, and that’s ok. I’m in a different season of life than I was back in my 20’s.

I never saw myself as the SAHM type. I was raised in a dual-working home so that’s the expectation I had for myself. It took a bit of time for me to come to terms with the fact that my contribution to our family was no longer financial, but that I was giving so much more than that (one thing I think a lot of moms out there struggle with.) The first few months were an adjustment for all of us. There were days where I was a hot mess and thought we had made the wrong decision. But in time we settled into our routine and I ended up liking being a SAHM, more than I think I thought I would. Ultimately it ended up being the answer our family needed at that particular time.

Here we are a year later. And just as we’ve finally hit our groove, and have things working like a well oiled machine, we’ve gone and changed our routine. This week now marks my first week back in the corporate world. Yes, you heard that correctly. I accepted a new job offer. Enter Debbie, suburban working mom — take 2.

I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. I wasn’t looking for a job, I mean we had just made the decision for me to stay home indefinitely 3 months ago! But in a pure serendipitous encounter with my former boss at a concert, things all just started to fall into place.

My boss offered me a role at a new company, as their part-time Events Manager. All the perks of the ad industry without demanding client deadlines (cue the birds chirping.) This is the sort of role that Michael and I had hoped for, dreamed of even. A part time gig that allows me to be home when I need to with the girls?! To be able to go on field-trips, volunteer in the classroom, be there for school drop off and pickup, etc. Not to mention get back to working with a team that I loved! Sounds like a win win, am I right?!

So how do I feel about this life change? Excited, nervous, happy, anxious, but ultimately optimistic. Change is never easy, but it’s always constant. Wish me luck and I hope you’ll continue to follow along as we embark on this next chapter! ♥

why I don’t share my kids pics online

For those of you that have been following along on this #momlife journey of mine you have probably noticed by now that I don’t post photos of my kids on my blog or social media. In fact if you read my “about me” page then you know that I don’t even refer to them by their real names. This was a very conscious decision that I talked through with my husband before I decided to open myself up to this little corner of the internet. It wasn’t until a few months ago, when I was having a conversation with a few other moms (that I had just met,) that I felt compelled to explain my decision. So I figure it’s about time I address it head on here — why I don’t share photos of my kids online.

We all live in this social-sharing world now where people have to snap a pic of their dinner before eating it (guilty,) or take an #ootd selfie in front of their dressing mirror. I also live in the mommy-blogger world where my social feed is blasted with images of adorable toddlers at splash pads or cute baby-wearing mamas. It wasn’t until I became a mom that I paused to think about the photo content I was about to share.

A few years ago my brother-in-law mentioned in conversation that his kids had commented what they wanted him to share/not share on social media. It was then that I first started to really think about what parents post on the internet and what I myself would be comfortable sharing. So I started to pay attention to other bloggers and I noticed that a good majority of them (whom I have never met but follow their journey) posted pics of their kids, going to school or at the local park, on vacation, etc. and I realized that if I knew their kids names and could recognize them walking down the street then any stranger could. And that just didn’t sit well with me. No disrespect or judgement to those mamas, I’m just slightly paranoid (I can admit it.) I mean, I’m the girl that doesn’t post updates when I’m in the middle of vacation because I don’t need people knowing when I’m not at my house. So why would my kids be any different?

My reasoning first and foremost is their safety. I can’t police who visits my page, but I can prevent them from knowing what my children look like, where they go to school, etc. by controlling the content in which I choose to make public. This world is full of good people but it’s still full of shadiness and it would be so easy for a stranger to follow my profile and then approach my children with enough information so that they didn’t seem like a stranger. For this reason I try my best to be very aware and limit what I post publicly, as well as to my personal (private) accounts.

Secondly, if my niece and nephew are able to recognize at a young age what they want their mom and dad to share/not share on social media, what’s not to say that my girls won’t feel the same in a few years? While I see me posting photos on my personal accounts as a way of keeping an online scrapbook, the same way my mom kept old polaroids of me in a diapers in a photo album, my girls might not find it so harmless one day. We all know that once something is out on the internet it’s out in the world forever and I don’t want what is my innocent gesture of capturing memories to embarrass them or make them feel uncomfortable in any way when they’re older.

Now I’m not totally naive. I know that there are ways around this, especially because I do have personal accounts where I share pics with family and friends (and I try my best to monitor my privacy settings on those accounts.) I also have family members that have posted photos, and let’s be honest, it’s really hard to tell grandparents that they can’t post a proud photo of their grand-babies right?! Side bar: I always ask permission from parents before posting pics of their children be it friends or family on my personal accounts. I do what I can to keep my children’s’ identities private as much as I possible and when it comes to this blog and my public social media accounts that’s where I draw the line for sharing.

So how do I have a mom-blog if I don’t show the very things that made me a mom? Well, I realized that I could still tell my story and be relatable without showing my kiddos, and perhaps there were other moms out there struggling with this very same thing. And I do still post pics from time to time where you might see the girls from the back, or once in a blue moon I’ll cover their face with an emoji.

Not posting photos my kiddos seems to be to best solution I can come up with to protect them from those who may not be following my journey for the right reasons. At the end of the day we each need to do what’s right for us and this is the decision that I am most comfortable with for me and my family.

Summer is officially here! That means we need to get out and soak up the sunshine as much as we can (I mean, it’s Michigan it could snow tomorrow *wink.*) One thing I’ve learned since having two kiddos is that it helps to streamline our “get out of the house to the car” time as much as possible. I mean, on a normal day it can take me 20 minutes to coral the kids out of the house and to the car!

After I put together our Mary Poppins gone fishin’ bag it hit me, I needed a Summer Grab & Go Bag! This way all the things I could possibly need are in one place – no more hunting and running around last minute to find the sunscreen or a hat. So now whenever we leave the house, all I have to do is grab this bag on our way out the door. Besides, when we’re out running around town you never know when you might hit up a splash pad and need a towel!

Today is the last day of school for both of my kiddos. While they’re excited to have “summer vacation,” this mama is overwrought with emotion.

You see, the girls will not be returning to daycare in the Fall now that I’m playing the role of a SAHM. And, well, we’ve been going to the same daycare since Grace was 3 months old. In fact, her current Preschool teacher used to be the teacher in her infant room back when we first started. We have formed relationships with the teachers over the last 4 years. We know them and even their families.

These women have watched my girls grow. They were there for their first tummy roll over, their first steps. These teachers taught my kids how to use a fork and spoon, and they’re the ones that taught Grace her ABC’s and how to spell her name. They’ve watched the girls personalities form and watch Grace transition from an only child to big sister. These women have become part of our daily lives. My girls love them and these women love my girls, as if they were their own. They’re part of our family.

National Reading Month: favorite read-aloud books for kids

A while back I was talking with my niece about a new book series she was reading and during the conversation I told her about my favorite book series when I was a young girl: The Baby-Sitters Club. Then a couple weeks later when I saw her again she was excited to show me the new book she had just gotten — it was the first book of the series for The Baby-Sitters Club! She had already read it and was starting it for a second time. It was pretty neat that she picked out that book based on a conversation we had. We started talking about the book (the parts that I could remember) and for a moment we connected on something we never had before and it was, truly, a very cool moment for me. It’s actually pretty inspiring when I think of how it all stemmed from what seemed like a simple conversation while I was doing the dishes.

To springboard off that inspiration I wanted to do something for National Reading Month, so I thought I would share a couple of my girls favorite books with all of you!

Happy Monday, I hope you all had a lovely weekend! We had a low-key weekend just hanging out at the house. Friday night was pizza and movie night — I introduced the girls to a classic Disney movie, Mary Poppins. At the end Grace told me that she wanted to watch the movie “every day.” That made my heart smile. We watched it again on Saturday night. *wink*

Even though we had a fairly uneventful weekend I seem to be dragging a bit this morning. It’s definitely an extra-large cup of coffee kind of day.

Speaking of which, grab your cup of coffee and settle in, because this one is for all the mamas struggling to keep their kids stuff organized — I know I’m not the only one. I mean there are about 1,000+ boards called “playroom organization” or something of the like. Between the crayons, legos, books, barbies, etc. it can get out of hand quickly. And can someone tell me why children love to dump out the entire bin of toys? Not just like one bin because they’re looking for something, but they empty every. single. bin. Why?!

Our playroom is an ever evolving task of mine, always a work in progress. I’ve scoured Pinterest boards for ideas and inspiration, continuously on the hunt for ways to make our playroom the cutest little put together space on the block. Funny little story…

When Grace was a baby I tied labels to all of the cubbies with pictures of what belong in them. I had seen it on so many Pinterest boards — it looked cute and I convinced myself it would help us keep the room tidy. WRONG! No one paid attention to the labels. When it came time to cleanup kids just put toys in whatever bin was closest to them — parents too! After everyone left I would go back and re-organize to put everything in it’s right place. *facepalm*

dear 2018 ,

I’m not one for making resolutions (because let’s be honest how many of us stick to them?!) but I am feeling very inspired by what may come of this year. Plus my motivation level is at an all-time high (probably due in part to me being at home full-time,) I would say my current status could be categorized as “crushing it.”

The past year (mainly the last 4-6 months) has helped me realize a few things that I need so for 2018 I have set some goals. Goals > Resolutions.

Happy Halloween friends! I don’t know about you but October seemed to fly by for us. There are just so many activities from local fall fun festivals to trunk-or-treat and school parties we seem to have some Halloween activity every week. That and I probably signed us up to do everything now that I’m home and have “a little more time on my hands” (said no mom ever!)

This year Grace decided that she wanted to be a spider for Halloween – she was very adamant about it. So we got to work designing and stitching up her spider costume back in September. She’s worn it a few times now to some of the Halloween outings we’ve had and she absolutely loves it! Then yesterday I picked her up from school and she tells me she’s decided she now wants to be Elsa for Halloween and just wear her princess Elsa play dress. Seriously child, the main event is in 24-hours and you want to pull a game changer on me?!! (Insert tears of laughter/defeat here.) Luckily we compromised and she agreed to be Elsa for her school Halloween party today but still be the spider for trick-or-treating tonight. Whew, dodged that one! Thought you’d all get a kick out of that one.
